As with any other method of making up a feed for a baby, it’s essential that good hygiene practices are observed when using and maintaining your Perfect Prep™ machine.
It’s very important that your everyday routine includes simple hygiene steps like keeping formula away from the hopper and only ever holding the top of the filter. Ensure that your hands and all surfaces that come in to contact with the machine and its components are clean, and that the unit is away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
How often should I clean my machine?
- Before its first use and then on a 4-weekly basis.
- If your machine hasn’t been used for 1 week.
- When replacing your filter.
- After a de-scaling cycle
How to clean
- To clean your Perfect Prep™ machine, follow these instructions:
- Remove the lid, hopper and bottle stand and set the filter to one side (top side down).
- Clean the external machine surface with a clean cloth (it is advisable to use an antibacterial solution), taking care to clean in all grooves and under the dispenser spout.
- At this time the lid, hopper and bottle stand should also be cleaned using hot soapy water, rinsed thoroughly, and allowed to dry naturally (do not use cloths or tea towels to dry).
- Plug in the unit, the empty tank warning light will illuminate.
Now choose from the following two cleaning options:
- Using a cold-water sterilising solution (following manufacturer guidelines for using with 1.8 litres of water), add required amount to the water tank. Fill the tank to the max line with cold water and place a suitable container under the dispenser spout.
- Pour 1 litre of clear/white (food grade) vinegar into the water tank. Top up the water tank to the max line with freshly boiled water and place a suitable container under the dispenser spout.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are also changing your Tommee Tippee water filter, press the filter reset button for 2 seconds to clear the machine memory before using for a feed.
How to descale your machine and replace the filters
- Remove the filter from the hopper – this is very important.
- Fill the water tank with 500ml of distilled white vinegar (4% or 5%).
- Place a container under the dispenser outlet.
- Press the descale button for 2 seconds and the system will run a descale process. During the descale process the red descale light will continue to flash.
- At the end of the descale process an alarm will sound and the descale light will switch off.
- Next two cleaning cycles will run.
- Place a container under the dispenser outlet.
- Fill the tank with 1 litre of boiling hot water.
- The tank hot light will switch on.
- Press cleaning mode to flush the water through.
- The boiling water will empty via the dispenser.
- Once finished, ‘tank empty’ will light up.
- We suggest repeating the cleaning cycle twice.
- Once done, replace the filter and add cold water into the hopper.
Remember after any cleaning your Perfect Prep™ machine will dispense 2 cold water shots when you make the first bottle. Discard these and you’re good to go.
How to replace the filter in your Perfect Prep™ machine?
- A red change filter warning light will illuminate when the filter needs replacing soon (approx. 30 litres remaining). IF THIS LIGHT FLASHES, THE FILTER MUST BE CHANGED IMMEDIATELY.
- Place a container under the dispenser outlet.
- Press the cleaning mode button and hold for 2 seconds. The water will then drain out.
- Press the ‘volume reset’ button for 2 seconds – this clears the memory.
- Remove the container and take out the hopper.
- Remove the old filter.
- Place the hopper back in, without the filter.
- Start a set up and clean cycle.
- Fit your new filter and you’re all set.
Remember after any cleaning your Perfect Prep™ machine will dispense 2 cold water shots when you make the first bottle. Discard these and you’re good to go.
WARNING: Do not use other brands of filter in your machine. Even if they fit, they may not remove the same level of bacteria. Using this machine without a Tommee Tippee water filter could put your child’s health at risk.

We’ve prepared some common questions and troubleshooting advice to help you with your new Perfect Prep™ machine.
Where is the best place to keep my Perfect Prep™ machine?
- Keep it out of direct sunlight.
- Regularly top it up with cold tap water rather than letting a full unit stand and warm for long periods of time.
- Keep a cold jug of water in the fridge.
- Add some ice cubes to the hopper.
Do I need to boil the water before I pour it into the water hopper?
No, we recommend you use normal tap water in the hopper. If you do use boiling water, the machine will recognise that the water is too hot, and it won’t let you dispense a feed as the milk would be too hot and pose a risk to your baby.
How long can I leave unused water in the tank?
Water is a food stuff. We recommend using it within 1-2 days. If you haven’t used your machine in the last 7 days, we recommend running a cleaning cycle.
What does the hot shot do?
The 70°C hot shot helps to dissolve the formula powder quickly and easily, it also kills bacteria which may be present in the formula itself. Giving you extra peace of mind that your baby’s feed is safe.
Why is the amount of feed over or under the level of feed I was expecting?
As is normal with all manufactured products, the Perfect Prep™ machine dispensed water volume has an allowed tolerance of +/- 5%. Additionally, there are potential tolerances in the measurement graduations of our Closer to Nature bottles. This means that any volume below 100 ml may vary by +/- 5 ml, and any volume above 100 ml may vary by +/- 5%. It’s therefore possible for the combination of both tolerances, machine, and bottle, to make the volume dispensed by the machine appear inaccurate. Our Closer to Nature baby bottles all meet or surpass the requirements for volume tolerances as specified by European Standard EN 14350. Although we do not manufacture formula powder, we have looked at what the leading brands recommend and most assume that a 9lb+ baby will be on 4oz feeds. It is difficult to recommend a "suitable from" age because every newborn’s weight is different. Some babies are onto 4oz feeds within a couple of weeks whereas others may take longer.
Why can’t I make a feed smaller than a 4oz bottle?
- An initial hot shot big enough to dilute the formula into
- A dilution big enough to dilute the hot down to body temperature ready to serve
For any smaller feeds, we don’t have enough hot water in which to dilute the formula powder effectively, or enough to dilute and cool it down sufficiently from 70°C.
Why do I have to use a Tommee Tippee filter?
The Tommee Tippee filters include an anti-bacterial filtration membrane which has been verified as being as effective as boiling water for removing bacteria. So, although other water filters will fit your machine, they will NOT remove the same level of bacteria. Therefore, it’s extremely important that you make sure you’re buying and using the correct Tommee Tippee filters with your Perfect Prep machine. Find out more about the testing results and what makes our filters more effective here.
How often do I need to change the filter?
On average the filter should last around 3 months, however this depends on the frequency of use and what size bottles you are preparing.
Why do I need to submerge the filter before first use?
Submerging primes the filter before use ensures that any air bubbles or loose particles within the filter are removed prior to use. If bubbles remain, it could affect the operation of the machine. Submerging should only take a minute or so.
Sometimes when I change the water filter there are black particles on the cartridge. What are they?
You may find that there’s a small residue of black carbon in the bag or on the surface of the cartridge; this can happen and it’s nothing to be concerned about. These dust particles are harmless and will be reduced during the initial set up process when submerging in clean fresh water. The carbon used in the filter is food grade certified and therefore poses no harm to your little one
Why does my unit have no power?
- Batch code of the unit (this is engraved on the base consists of 5 numbers and then the letters XO).
- The date and retailer purchased from.
- Proof of purchase.
IS IT SAFE TO MAKE A BOTTLE WITH THE PERFECT PREP?
Yes. Perfect Prep™ machines are designed to make a parent’s life simpler and passes all appropriate standards for electrical baby products. The filter has been designed and independently tested to be as effective as boiling water from a microbiological perspective and ensures impurities are removed so that clean and safe water is delivered to the bottle, and the hot shot kills bacteria that may be in the formula powder.
